Oh I'm sorry. I'll make it better for you. Oh, yea, by "we" I totally meant you and me. /sarcasm. (Didn't call you an idiot, and yet it somehow makes the same point....)

More likely it's about conquest in general.

Nice. Your "facts" got blown out of the water so you resort to name calling. You win. Have a good day.

it can go both ways. while the lyrics themselves probaby refer to the native americans of the americas, the theme of oppression at the hands of the greedy is reflective of the plight of africans as well.

That's Alanis Morrisette singing in the background at the end.

I'm pretty sure it's about the Native South Americans, not Africans.

Do a search on this video Dave Matthews - Bartender/Don't Drink the Water (part 4) at 07:05 and you will see what inspired him to write this song. Everybody is entitled to interpret a song in any way possible, in other word if it fits on you, wear it. This is a great song and it is like a stream of light that once it turns on it never stops traveling through the universe.

I know that Dave is from South Africa and I also know that the Amazon is in South AMERICA. This song is not about the slaves from Africa. It's about the taking of land and life from early native Americans. North and South. "WE" didn't enslave anybody. I wasn't around yet and will not be held responsible for those actions. We have come a long way since those days. Now, a black man has the lead in the presidential campaign and on the other side,a female vp candidate. Things have changed.

Many people think this is about how we settled in America and removed the Native Americans, but it's not. Little do many fans now, Dave grew up in South Africa. This video takes place in the Amazon Rain forest. This is about how we enslaved the Africans and took their land, not the Native Americans.

Eloquently said and pointed, odd to find you chatting amongst the chattel... As I fear your message flew out the window and was missed by all the cowboys and Indians none the less, thanks for the posting - J
