I have that disorder. When I get in conversations with people I don't know, I freak out and sometimes have a panic attack. It's scary actually.

You think highschool is tough, wait untill you get to college, that's when you really need to speak up and "HAVE" to start talking or else you're just wasting your time there. Not trying to scare you or anything, just giving you a heads up.

im scared of being diagnosed with this. I've always been a shy kid, but since i got into high school its gotten worse, i cant talk to people i dont know very well, if i do, it just comes out as a mumble. I always feel tense and "on guard" when im in a big group of people, and i find it hard to look people in the eye when im talking to people. I hate it because theres nothing i can really do about it.

And I'm not a complete recluse - I'm quite successful at managing a team of workers in my part time job and I have recently joined a charity club run at the college. It's casual and formal group settings that leave me feeling uncomfortable and reserved. I often find I criticise myself too much afterwards and blow things out of proportion. It can be like a vicious cycle of putting yourself down and feeling uncomfortable at the next social event.

Focus on how you did well and work on it from there. Keep a list that you can look at every day. I found it very helpful to find somewhere quiet to sit down and just break apart what events in the last couple of years had triggered the building up of low self-esteem. Working backwards and realising the chain of events. It's definitely helped me and given me a clearer set of goals to opening up more. Also realise that it is about a transition - not something you have to achieve overnight.

Consider this thought: Remaining comfortable with myself in general and not allowing myself to be put down by others. In the process, I wont take a negative view to other peoples criticisms. They have the right to their own opinion how I interpret it is up to me and how it affects them is their problem. If you read the book it explains the idea of the conscious and unconscious thought processes and how -'ve thoughts prevail. Try and list all of the + experiences in your life. (cont)

I suggest taking a look at the following book: Creating Confidence - The Secrets of Self-Esteem by Rex Johnson and David Swindley. Becoming comfortable with yourself (your inner image - accepting yourself as you are) is a healthy way to approach changing your image. I was tearing my hair out in a mad determination to change myself to suit others...(cont)

I've made a substantial amount of progress since then but still suffer anxiety after going out to pubs etc. I highly recommend reading up self-help books. The process of discovery (and 'recovery') started last week after experiencing anxiety over a social situation. Anxiety is also linked to depression (as you guys probably know already). My depression got to the point where I was feeling worthless and even thinking about graduation didn't stir any emotions - I felt empty.(cont)

I'm trying to loosen up but I tend to be 'guarded' and tense in a social environment. I'm 25 now and I've spent a lot of time on my own studying and not really going out very often with others. I think it's important to recognise your past and think about some of the reasons behind being so shy. For me, low self-esteem was increased in high school thanks to the bullying and taunts after my back operation. (cont)

I'm not sure I'd call my situation social anxiety disorder. I have no problems going out on my own to places or 'mixing' with people I know in pubs/clubs. But my problem is trying to loosen up and be less self-conscious. I'm often told I'm too quiet and shy - and indeed when I'm in a social situation I feel a bit more relaxed when I'm not engaging in conversations. I find it hard to open up and contribute in group environments as well. (cont)

Basically mental disorders are not fair because most of these people are real beautiful people (inside and outside). Real emotional, talented and in touch and aware with theirselfs, others and the world. Big mouthed, heartless people that wear masks always seem to be uneffected. One plus is that during these problems you really get to known yourself and therefore can enormoudly mentallly progress because of this.
