I don't get it. The first African American to win the US Open was Althea Gibson in 1957 (and 1958), not Arthur Ashe. She was also the first African American to win Wimbledon (57 and 58) and the French Open (56). She was also one of the first African Americans to play professional golf. Run Athletics needs to get its facts straight because there's no way a man as great as Arthur Ashe would them disrespecting someone person (Gibson) who paved the way not only for him but Tiger Woods as well.

I am currently a white college student who plays tennis avidly. I have a black roommate, who is by far the best roommate I've ever had. He came from a family where his father was in jail, he lived off foodstamps, and didn't have hot water during the night in winter. He realized that he COULD get out of that lifestyle, and he has. Yes, she was a great woman and one that not many people are aware of. She was a brave and impressive woman. Wilma Rudolph is another amazing woman who isn't known to many. She overcame extreme poverty, discrimination and childhood polio to become the best female track star of her time.

What a horrible attitude you have. I find it interesting that the two most repressed groups in this country are African Americans and Native Americans. The first group was stolen from their country and the second had their country stolen from them. Maybe that's why they are so disadvantaged.
