Look, Bird hit a bad note. It's funny watching all these comments about how Bird was 'disrespectful' to Hawk, and how Hawk looked 'irritated' -- just to avoid admitting the man made a mistake. It sounds like Bird cuts him because the two artists' visions are so different. What I see on the Hawk's face is respect and understanding of a great artist's expressive need. Bird proves that brash beginning by climbing to highs of feeling not dreamt of at the start. It is revelation. Bird's melodic innovations! Man! He could do that all day long! It is not disrespectful. They are splitting the tune up in 8s....8 measures apiece and Hawkins 8 measures were up. Bird chose to begin his idea right on 1 of the next section. Listen to it as one continuous line of music. That's usually the idea musicians have when splitting 8s. It's improvised jazz music guys....neat little European ideas of order and whose "turn" it is to play dont apply, and neither do the social ideas of someone cutting someone off. Both are great masters, not combatants.

I agree totally. I suppose Charlier Parker was a man in a hurry and it was Coleman Hawkins that made a Charlier Parker possible. No one can compare to the sound of Bean though - except perhaps Lester Young. I heard Sonny Rollins play with Bean on a CD recently and I said again - no one can compare to the master.

This is definitely NOT parody. Watch carefully how serous he is: he sings along with the record, but does not do foolish things, he sings certain passages an octave lower to protect his voice. He practices the stage movement. He relaxes listening to instrumental music, which is more soothing than vocal music for the nerves. He whispers while relaxing in order to protect his voice. Stupendous! I've always loved the voice, and it seems the man behind it was just as marvellous. Only MdM could pull off a villa lined with portraits of himself (with Otello naturally taking pride of place - apparently he was buried in his Otello costume, tights and all.) This is astounding footage right from a Nicolai Gogol novel only it's MDM walking through arias with us as witnesses. MDM shows more imagination and drama in these short snippets than any singer to walk onto an opera stage. I haven't a clue as to what he was saying but the piece is fantastic theatre and he knew it! Mario Del Monico was a very smart man. Thanks for posting this!

Lanza had the greatest Raw Talent of anyone ever, period. It could have been refined for sure as he was young, but his voice, just comparing voices, Jussi and the rest are not at this level of talent. Sure they acheived great things. The only other singers that had this, were in my view, Caruso and Gigli. Something very special.

I agree with Invention13, as with him doing films i used to watch him as a kid,I'm not a singer or anything but as a kid even i got hooked by his voice and have been a fan of his ever since and I'm now 40, and Mario's voice was gifted by God i think as he still beats all others in his hey day if you listen to his voice he can really hit those notes and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up

WOW! I haven't heard a Largo like that since Biastianini. I respectfully disagree with Ericdrayvin. He could reach the lower notes just fine....they simply aren't his climax notes. This is an incredibly difficult area for many baritones. The tessatura is high and the colouratura is very quick. MDM just looked like he was having fun with it. The way too long penultimate note was a bit too masturbatory for my taste, but this is a recital...you can do that.

I love MDM like hard core...but there is a reason this was written for baritones; this is just disturbing...you can't sing all the great arias, yet he wanted to; he did this same thing with the prolouge in Pagliacci; he insisted to sing it in many of his performances of the opera. This is like a baritone trying to sing Di Quella Pira; it just doesn't sound good. But still I love MDM all the same!

You can never tell how resonant a voice is from a recording like this. And I can't believe you could think he has a better vocal range from this short clip. di Paolo...relative ease? It's obvious he's not singing his high notes well when he's cracking up there. The cracks are almost predictable considering how he visibly grabs the tone with his larynx and how he stiffens his body. As for Domingo, I hope you've heard him live. His voice is plenty resonant and his high notes are wonderful!

Herbert Von Karajan is the best conductor because he can feel how the music is supposed to sound in his soul. I own this recording of Cavalleria Rusticana and it is by far the best one I have heard. Really stunning!

I don't understand people who say that Pavarotti's musicianship was inferior. He is one of the best tenors of all time and he probably did around ten roles the best of all tenors or at least he was not surpassed by any other tenor (and this is an important number of roles). It is true he could not read any music but Caruso had that kind of ''deficit'' as well. Ricardo Mutti called Pavarotti ''the point of reference, like Callas and Tebaldi'' and I believe this point of view says it all.

I think its pretty funny that they have found some way to feel superior to Pavarotti, not by singing better Abut by rubbishing him for his 'musicality'. as others rubbish his poor acting abilities, or his size. His many limitations never detracted from his singing, which is what he is admired, even worshipped, for. Even his most ardent fans would not suggest he was perfect in ALL things.

Brian Schexnayder sang 207 performances at the Met. Pavarotti sang 378. Both studied their roles presumably with the same assistant conductors and coaches like Warren Jones. Star tenors can be bad musicians. Second tier baritones virtually never have musical flaws - the competition is just too severe. Master class in Modena 1991 A bass was singing "La Calumnia"from Barbiere and Pavarotty interrupted him 3 times asking him to sing"the real notes".The poor guy did not understand and kept repeating the same initial notes.After a while the "big maestro"sang the "real notes"and he did sing the semiquavers that are written but FOR THE ORCHESTRA!!!not the singer's. What was so humiliating is that 3 pianists were present and none of them dared to correct the "meastro" He had no musical education.
