Don't get me wrong, it's good to bring in new beats and rhythms (AB Quintanilla and Pete Astudillo did that and made wonderful music), but not to the point that Tejano loses its identity and sort of becomes a spectacle instead of a celebration of Tejano life and culture (ie: the new Tejano fusion going on with the rap music and neon colored outfits, kinda like Rudy y Los Nuevos Huevos Rancheros from Born in East L.A.)

I agree. With Selena's untimely death, Tejano took a real bad beating. No one was ever able to pick it up as much as she did. After she was gone there was no more competition or advancements in the music and sound. Jennifer Pena hasn't (in my honest opinion done much for the style of music)like Elsa Garcia, Selena, Elida, and Delia have. Also, I've noticed that all sort of different types of music and styles are being merged which (not all the time) tends to take away from that ....

Thank you so much for posting this. i love selena, she will forever be my favorite singer. i was born and raised in corpus christi and still live here, i will never forget the day selena died. I agree, the media does need to understand the importance of not only Tejano, but all Mexican-American music. But sadly, I think that they never will. In today's society, almost all Mexican-Americans are viewed as "illegal immigrants" or they act like we just jumped the border no matter how long we and our families have been here. There is alot of racism and discrimintaion against Mexican-Americans in today's society. People always look down on us and never give us a chance to show our talents.

This songs epitomizies the plight of the migrant worker. My entire famiy, with the exception of my younger brother, were all born in Mexico and were would make the annual journey to Illinois and Wisconsin for the seasonal jobs. Eventhough they were hard times for our family, they were the best times of my life. They made me into the man I am today, I reinforce in my sons the importance of an education but I also remind them of who they are and where they came from.

irodri1538,I remember those times too . One time this teacher was beating a friend of mine until he took the paddle away from her and beat her back . He was a Hero to us Tejanos, when we were in the 4th. grade he was expelled from grammar school .He now lives in Houston and when he comes to my hometown,Sinton,Tejas we talked about those hard times and the Injustices .
