i think becuase of how big america is, that even trains travelling at 220 mph like the planned california high speed line, is still not fast enough, something along the lines of 350-400mph is needed in order for rail to have a huge impact on the US and probably even 500mph if you are travelling by rail from new york to los angeles!

*g* Honestly, I strongly doubt that will happen. First of all, you can't direct bulk cargo to highspeed. Even with the most modern equipment in use, cargo doesn't exceed 120km/h currently. Only passenger trains reach higher speed. Come to Europe and see for yourself, that despite having highspeed-lines, we still have lowspeed-lines and a HUGE variety of trains running them. :o)

I agree on the high speed thing for passenger train perspective like Amtrak but from a railfan perspective i disagree because if every rail line in the US switchs to high speed rail then it ruins the varitey of engines i see every time when i go out train watching.

But they tend to easily forget (as user rberding does), that by highspeed-lines trains easily outrun planes by time, by environmental measures and soon by prices, too. Considering the comment on the "typical American taxpayer": start thinking about how many billions, even trillions of dollars the US spends on wars each year...

Here is a compilation of trains we saw on Super Train Sunday. I think I have spent nearly the last 10 years foaming instead of watching "The Game"...anyway, the video is kind of long, but it was a great sunny day, with temps reaching 80 degrees in Tehachapi for a while.

Thanks. Yea I see lots of mixed rail companies on auto trains. Like lots of NS, CSX, UP, etc auto cars on auto trains. Some times even NS or CSX engines on UP trains as well. It is just a mix of foreign power and stuff. I think some of those articulated auto raks are found just on BNSF trains. I have only seen some of those articulated auto racks only on BNSF trains.

Depending on the length of the train it can take several minutes for a train to round the entire loop. Also it can be anywhere from 10 mins to several hours in between trains. It is usually a pretty busy place. Just bring a scanner with the right frequencies when you go down there and you should be set.

Due to bridge repair near Santa Barbara on Union Pacific's Coast Subdivision, Amtrak had to detour the Coast Starlight through Tehachapi on June 22, 2008.
I chased the southbound #11 from Bakersfield to the Tehachapi Loop.

i stand corrected , i was on the 14 headed north, you were chasing the 11 going south, my bad .....i was in the observation car of the #14 though, i still have the ticket from the excursion, guess i'll always save it, it was a real treat going through the Tehachapi Loop. Originally i thought i would be going over the coast sub but when i was told by some passengers at Union Station LA about the Tehachapi my jaw almost dropped to the floor :)

I missed the show of 2008. The Bakersfield and Mojave subdivisions of SP San Joaquin Division are my favorite part of railroading. I rode SP 51 in 1966; and SP 52 in 1967, 1969, and 1970 through this area. Each time Harry Albright was the Conductor. I grew up in Glendale. I would go see the trains at the station many times almost from birth. I am a train nut/fan because my Dad took me to see trains. My cousins--Family Joham--live near the Tehachapi Loop.
