Sorry, Taildragger51 is correct. Rory's liver was damaged by long-term use of prescribed medication. According to his brother he was NOT the heavy drinker he was rumoured to be. In fact he was careful to avoid the excesses indulged in by many of his peers. Rory's death was a tragedy, but to me the way in which the memory of such a rare combination of talent and good sense is being warped by rumour,speculation and gossip is a far worse tragedy. He is being robbed of his personality and humanity.

srv was flashy, but nonetheless great, and remains overrated, even more so due to his early death (RIP). rory on the other hand, didnt appeal to the public eye as much, but was more raw. Overall, id say rory was better

Lucky guy, unfortunately he died when I was only three years old so I've never had the opportunity to meet him, my Dad did a bit of roadie work for him so he's got a hell of a lot of memories. Rory was going to open the local guitar shop, unfortunately he died shortly before it was opened. That would have probably been the time that I would've met him.

beachhutblues: Rory was one of the FEW people(and i mean FEW people) who didn't see "colour". I am a jazz musician who is Anglo- Indian and yet when i met him, in 1 minute, i felt 'this guy is TOTALLY sincere!". I felt i'd known him all my life. Not a shred of hate in him... no curse words, no ego, no pretense(very rare!) He would've made a priest feel ashamed of himself.

roryrockssocks: I know what you mean. I met Rory briefly after a London gig in 1972. He was casually sitting by himself near the refreshments stand. He was extremely intelligent. Spoke to me passionately about jazz artists like Ornette Coleman and Indian music. He died at Kings College Hospital, London at a time when i was visiting my own dying father.(15 mins from where i lived) I had no idea he was there.

I can believe that, yeah, it's a pity that there's still so little known about him. And yeah, he was a great guy, was up the cemetery where he was buried just a few days ago, trying to not shed a tear is a challenge I tell you.
