Know what you mean but for me it's the sparseness of piano and acoustic guitar with barely discernible beat which provide the perfect vehicle for Bruce to provide arguably his finest ever vocal. It's as near perfect as it gets. Even an expertly judged harmonica might detract/clutter.

As a Huge Springsteen fan (mostly 73-84) I have to say if the rest of the album is as good at this song, It may be time to consider hanging up the guitar altogether. It would be a shame too, because I thought he had broken out of his funk entirely with Magic. I remember seeing this video in 1984 when I was ten. It was the height of Bruce Springsteen mania, and at that age I obviously didn't understand the real meaning behind his popular, upbeat songs that were being played constantly on MTV. I do remember seeing this video one night and feeling kind of haunted by it. I guess it was the first time that I started to see there was more to Bruce than meets the eye
