The problem with the smart car is not the rigidity and crumple zones, its the mass, or lack thereof... you hit anything with substantially greater mass and the g-shock is going to be far greater in the Smartcar... that is what would kill you. The lack of large crumple zones to dissapate energy (relying more on the rigidity of the shell) makes matters worse. At least they point this out in the video.

You mean fuel consumption or durability? I own a GSXR. Fuel consumption pretty much depends on how throttle happy you are. On the track, going over 200km/h for a few hours drinks up around 17litres of petrol. Oil change every 6000km minimum and change the oil and air filter every 2 oil change blah blah blah... Suzuki engines are tough, they can take a beating when revved hard and driven fast.

The test is rigged. The large Benz has a generous "crumple zone" that absorbs the impact. What if TWO SMARTs crash, and none has an crumple zone? Or what if it crashes agains a pole, or an older car/truck with no crumple zone? Yep, you're right. Ironically I've read so many articles online saying using premium gas DOESN'T increase performance or gas mileage, but I always disagreed with that. No matter what car I've had, I notice the engine runs smoother, quieter, feels peppier, and maybe gets 1-2mpg better. I still say it's totally absurd that the Smart requires premium though.
