Well, maybe. They do a very different version of the song. Not sure if it's "better". But it all boils down to how you feel about covers. Very few covers really add to the original; those that are parodies are usually more worthwhile than vain attempts to improve on the original. The worst thing that can be said of any given band - which I've heard a few times - is that their best song is a cover. Thats a pretty damning statement on the band's ability to write music.

I do have to say, some kind of unspoken stipulation about being industrial and popular is a big no no. Which is something I do not fully grasp. I'm not a huge NIN fan, but hats off to Reznor for gaining popularity for doing what he wants, in oppose to just emulating what everyone currently likes. The directors and talent scouts need to make the change too. It's the media.. television shows, modelling agencies, magazine, designers etc that are looking for this. If they all make a change too to what is really "normal" then young girls will see what IS normal. This is correct. Industrial was a term that was used to describe anyone on Industrial Records, but people started using the term to describe bands similar to those on the label, and now, nobody knows what it is. Hell, today, people think that EBM and IDM are forms of industrial when they're anything but. EBM was also influenced more heavily by techno and other dancefloor genres than it was industrial. Skinny Puppy was influenced by Throbbing Gristle and have similar mindsets about music

Goth was like you said 'post' punk, which centered around a british club known as The Bat Cave back in the 70's. Industrial was started around the same time, but in a different part of England. The main band known for coining that phrase was Throbbing Gristle, a group of performance artists. They were from an industrialised english town called Birmingham.
