You are obviously not drinking real absinthe if you feel that way. Everybody has different taste, and not everybody will like it, but nobody who's had the real thing would describe it that way. That description is obviously of a fauxsinth/Czechsinth.

It's true sugar isn't "needed", but it's not just to "look cool". It's a matter of taste and personal preference. Most people used it back then. Also absinthe was no more bitter back then than it is today.

There isn't that much truth to what you say, I mean it's really a matter of preference, I usually take mine with 1 sugar because I like my absinthe to be a little sweet. It's really not about being authentic, it's about how you like your beverage.

It will be "okay" only if you like it that way. It's not more manly or authentic to drink it without sugar. In fact the historical norm was sugar, and lots of it. Many posters/cards show absinthe spoons loaded with up to 3 sugar tablets bein dissolved into the absinthe.
