ich hör grob die schiene seit über 20 jahren. angefangen mit sXe HC, über skatepunk und weiss der geier. es gab meines erachtens in all den jahren nicht mal im ansatz ne band die an bsf rankam. einfach nur schade dass sie sich aufgelöst haben, after the eulogy wäre zwar schwer zu toppen gewesen aber ich würde bares zahlen für jeden weiteren song :)

The casting out finde ich persönlich auch sehr gut! hab ein konzert von ihnen schon besucht wo sie doch wesentlich härter spielten als auf der demo-cd! aber trotzdem ist bsf geschichte! leider oder vielleicht genau deswegen begeistert mich diese band so ! weil sie sich am "höhepunkt" ihrer karriere auflösten und nicht langsam mit 5 vielleicht folgenden mittelmäßigen LP´s ins abseits spielten. also von mir bekommen sie 5*

Tonality extends far further than just Wagner mind you (who can forget Sibelius?) but you're right all the same. Tonality is a great idea (for Schoenberg was more than correct in saying that there are still plenty of pieces left to be written in C major), and so Ligeti stands at one end of the spectrem, whilst say Danny Elfman at the other. A disagreement of preference indeed (though I'd take either).

Let me rephrase what some of my more vicious collegues in idea are trying to say. If you were to take for example the Bach Mass in B minor (amongst his greatest without question) and compared it to Ligeti's score, they are nearly identical in every aspect, save for the obvious tonal center of Bach's. Furthermore, it would be most prudent of you to actually reread your own lines before submitting them, for I cringed after seeing "pretest" used as such. Good day to you (or good night, whichever).

You're right about tonality still having a major impact in modern music. And of course, composers should always be aware of the past but at the same time look forward. Ligeti did this himself. As did Wuorinen and Carter, two of my personal favourites. Wuorinen uses the most consonant intervals in his tone rows as a structural element, which is also present in Carter's (mostly early) work, although he uses all-interval series chords as opposed to ones derived from tone rows.

But atonality evolved from tonality! We've gotten to a point in evolution where almost everything is "non-natural", why is that necessarily bad? You could say even tonal music was unnatural compared to the medieval plainchant songs sung by monks. Also, Serial music does not write itself. Bad composers often USE serialism as an excuse for not writing legitimate music, don't blame the system.

Putting 64 lines on a score doesn't make it more of a good work. But, that said, Ligeti and any type of atonal music does have a structure. I wouldn't compare it to the subtelty of tonal music tho;serialism for example, basically writes itself once it has started..those kinds of rules are far-fetched and non-natural. Not bad, just not "dictated by nature" but rather by human beings trying to be original. Tonal music just fitted naturally, it was the results of centuries of musical evolution.

They do. They weren't HIS guidelines to begin with, but the foundations of tonal music, from Bach to Wagner, still have a major impact on modern music. All popular music is based in some way on Tonal music, Jazz is a derivation of it. Classic Rock is,pop,hip-hop,R&B you name it..Its not as pure and present, and you're right, it's not ALL music. Atonal music is yet another way to organise sounds. Wether or not one appreciates it is personnal choice.
