Also, I do believe Glass, along with Rzewski, and Part, did not want to be mindless sheep themselves, for what would it matter if they composed in the Style of Bach, Stockhausen, or even Rachamaninoff? All they would find is limitation. That is why they are not conformists to the so-called norm. If we stuck with Bach, music would've been dead by the end of the 18th century, becoming monotonous. It is one thing to be taught, but there comes a point which transforms listening into composing music.

I don't mind Xenakis, Stockhausen, or Messiaen for that matter. However, I find more emotion in minimalist works such as Glass or Arvo Part, or John Taverner. What I love about Minimalism is that the emotion is not there, the work must be Deconstructed and applied to your human Being. It has no meaning unless you put meaning to it. Most of music has a pre-set meaning and interpretation, from Haendel to Xenakis. Minimalism is an interesting style, for you get out as much as you put in.

Regardless of your musical experience or your opinion on minimalist composers, the idea behind minimalism remains steadfast; to find beauty in a solitary idea, theme, or specific pitch. Just as all genres have eccentricities, so does minimalism. Just as all genres have those who dislike the ideals of such a genre, so will minimalism. Compositions will be effected because of this and because of ideas. Who's to say what may be next, though? Think of minimalism as what was next for yesterday.

I was reading critics' opinions on the Booker Prize and what it currently represents, and the feeling was that we have LOTS of good writers at the moment but no one really to match the Americans when it comes to national(ist) portrayals. However, there was a theme amongst several of them (and I don't think it was just wishful thinking/romantic yearning) that Britain is on the brink of a surge of new writers - given that we have proportionally more writers than ever.

Very often it's unpredictable momentum that creates dangerous and messy situations which aren't controllable anymore. Like that Prison Experiment.
