The American (and British) forces often did have a hard time fighting the German forces and if the bulk of them (75%) had not been stuck fighting the Soviets on the Eastern front, it is quite possible that they would have had an even harder time.

It is not how many you kill, but who you kill, and what you take out. The simple fact is it was the allied bombing campaign that ended any hope of German victory.
