THIS IS NOT a bitch or a put down - but I was watching Doc Watson (here, with Chet) and I can't help but notice how little movement Doc has in his left hand, compared to Normans. Effortless, smooth, almost unnoticed, whereas Norman has a "busy" left hand. Now, I do too, so it makes me feel I am still in with a chance!! I was trying to "smooth" the left out, a la Doc and it was a cow of a thing! Now I feel better!

I agree about Gambetta. Honestly, I think he's way overrated. For "speed" he mostly does lots of triplets (left hand hammer ons/offs). He also mutes a lot of notes. I don't think he holds a candle to Steve Kaufman, Cody Kilby, Josh Williams, David Grier, Norman Blake (who makes picking look effortless), Tony Rice or many others. Gambetta would also have trouble playing in a band due to his style which, to me, defeats the purpose of playing an instrument.

thomas1976, I can understand your point. Check out some of his later work, "Lady's Fancy" or "Jammed If I Do". The former includes an all-star cast including the original NGR). The latter has him playing duets with Watson, Rice, Blake as well as Beppe Gambetta (not my favorite BG picker but a monster in his own right). Hearing them side-by-side might put some perspective on why he is considered so highly.

No, its not even right to think of it as a GPS device. Its a recorder only. Ill have to send you a PM for a longer explanation for the FDR, because it is way longer than 500 characters. But, the problem with the altitude claim is one has to make assumptions. When its a normal, properly trained crew, we can make the assumptions with fair certainty, becase we can expect they would do the things they were supposed to. If "bb" means black box, then you misunderstand what it does. Its just a recording device. It has nothing to do with navigating or controlling rhe plane. Pilots have no way to manipulate anything inside the box. The only control they have over it is (if they pull the right curcuit breaker) they can cut power to the recorder. Thats about it.

Blake is a Southerner, born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee and lives about 30 minutes south of it now in a tiny little town in the hills of north Georgia. In other words, he's always been around the old fiddle tunes, many of which have their origins in Ireland or Scotland and were concentrated in western North Carolina and east Tennessee. James Bryan is from a mountain in north Alabama, fairly close to Chattanooga. His daughter is a really good musician as well.

Norman uses an interesting string setup. He buys individual strings and uses light, sometimes very light unwound strings, but a very heavy low E. He also cuts the nut and saddle to give non-uniform string spacing. I just ordered a set of strings to mimic his set-up. Here are the guages he uses(from high E to low E): .012 .016 .024 .034 .044 .060 He uses GHS Boomers. Norman is truly one of a kind. He makes it look so effortless. And he's equally capable with a mandolin or a fiddle.

So, so nice. First, using a cello as a bass! Second, Norman Blake's flatpicking and voice. Third, James Bryan on fiddle. I had the great opportunity to enjoy a slow jam that he lead in Elkins, WV last year. He looks quite a bit older these days, but he hasn't lost his chops. Five stars to you all.

So many people complaining about this animation, and not in very good ways either. The most I hear is "DIS IZ DER BORENG!" which is a terrible way of expressing your dislike for something. Personally, I think this is pretty amazing and entertained me the whole way through. Marian Anderson was true-blue "contralto"; the lowest female voice. From top to bottom is 1. soprano 2. mezzo-soprano and 3. contralto..... She had wonderful high notes, but her "comfort zone" was much lower than a normal mezzo. Other great contraltos are Kathleen Ferrier (great videos on youtube) and in our own time, Ewa Podles. Nowadays you necessarily not has to be put in a certain fach (spelling correct?), and you may swith roles depending of what your voice are capable to do, but the categories are still there. Norman has some difficulties with the top notes above a2 at the same time as her lower register are very full-timbred and rich, that´s why I believe she is more mezzo than a soprano. 100 years ago she had been a soprano without discussion, but times are changing.

Neither Wiki or Youtube are real facts, just thoughts and opinions. MY opinion is that the role of Fidelio and also Agathe in der Freischütz, was dramatic sopranos in the early 19th century. But, many things has changed since that. The tessitura for these roles are much lower than later examples of dramatic sopranoroles. Even the range is smaller.
