Yes and the majority of Brits see it as evoking a British hope and pride, I have no problem if you listen and imagine the opening screen of Looney tunes or two blokes doing an Egyptian sand dance etc. You may listen to sonata pathetique no.8 and imagine anything but romance, but 99 out of 100 people will feel romantic. Coming back on this video is like going back to an old town where nothing has moved on.

I agree: bloodless and mechanical playing, too marcato and also too fast. This music should be noble, profound and spiritually uplifting. However, because Gae41's written interpretation, posted below, is so much more expressive of this piece, his/her playing might simply be a function of clumsy technique, rather than any lack of musical feeling. He/she gets points for recognizing the beauty of the music, and for being brave enough to post it at all.

The Barenboim/CSO version has been a lightning rod for political comment. I quoted your answer here up there, I hope you don't mind. I want people there to know solidly that there is so much to talk about this music per se, and the emotions and feelings it evokes, that there should be no tolerance for petty bickering over which country of the world or which race is supreme. you're right, it's harsh, but true. It's so difficult to give music emotion and that's at least for me crucial if you want to play any piece. Regarding this wonderful music I think you have to play it gracefully and with elegance. and of course with grandeur. it's music that can raise you. you have to play it like that. good luck for learning this piece

That's a bit harsh! It can't be easy to express a full orchestra on just one instrument. However, if and when I learn this (sometime in the next couple of years or so on piano) I would try and put a bit more emotion into the rendition. Still, it's a fantastic transcription of a very difficult piece of music - I've tried it on the guitar and it certainly isn't easy!

jkhalsa...good question. I think it has that yearning quality within the rising and descending intervals. At first the music is tentative as though testing the water. Every time we strive for new heights, illustrated by rising 6ths, we fall back further i.e. descending 7ths. We are brought down to Earth as a reminder of our fragility. Finally though, we reach ourgoal as the music reaches the triumphant climax. The constant striving and yearning of the human soul to reach new heights. Gae41

I am a violinist who has fallen in love with this piece again after having played it 40 years ago in an orchestra. Can you as a musician say what makes this piece so special? I hear some church cadences in the harmonies, like in some hymns and amens. But can you say more? I consider this the most beautiful piece I've heard in a long time and have begun playing it wherever I go visiting friends and serenading them. Sometimes I fiddle the piano harmony and sing the melody best as I can!

I try to watch this every year when I can and I've noticed the BBC uses the same camera cuts, etc everytime but I nonetheless find it very effective: At the climax of the music at 3:23 onwards they always to this - fade into the words on the Cenotaph "THE GLORIOUS DEAD" and it never fails to make me well up, such an effective piece of editing together with such a stirring piece of music

Elgar used this musical portrait of Jaeger as a way to reminisce about the many hours they had spent discussing the slow movements of Beethoven symphonies. It takes only knowledge of Elgar's original theme and of Beethoven's ninth to see the genius of this masterpiece. It is unapologetically romantic and unabashedly lyrical but such were the times. Nimrod ,from the Enigma variations, A collection of peices Elger composed and dedicated to his friends.....the answer to this particular enigma:.Nimrod in Biblical terms was the Great-grand son of Noah, who was renown for his skills as a mighty hunter..................August Jaeger,a german, was one of Elger' closest friends...Jaeger in German translates to "Hunter". .....Clever stuff eh. kinda funny really my dad used to fly them and i can definatly say that is and MR2 cos ive been on the MRA4 and for starters none of them have every ben painted in that beige colour all are a grey colour. Also there is no Hub on the front left side of the fuselage

The whole airframe is not new at all. The MRA4 uses the MR2 fuselage which is stripped and reconditioned then with new wings, engines and systems (both aircraft and mission)

The whole airframe is new so is all the kit. It just keeps roughly the same design but it has longer wings and bigger intakes as the newer engines are bigger, more powerfull yet more fuel-efficent. So in a way your both right.
