What? Cliff died a tragic death (R.I.P) from an accident with the band's tour bus in 1986. Cliff was thrown out of the window and the bus flipped over and landed on top of him... Jason, however, injured his shoulder when he tried to catch a falling bass amp. He was subjected to immediate surgery. I think he injured his other one on a later occasion.

Well he was a classical trained pianist who also dabbled in jazz and southern rock so he knew musical theory and was credited by the other band members from Metallica for shaping thier sound. The guy was young when he died so its all subjective and we more then likely didnt even see half of what he could have accomplished in the 3 albums he actually wrote music for, so bass god maybe not to you but overrated he was not. Most of what he did in Metallica was experimentation at the time.

Comparing a 6-string picking bass player to a 4 string fingering bass player? That's pretty hard to do, but really. Look at the complexity of Burton's solos, and compare them to Jason's. Don't get me wrong, I think Jason's AMAZING, but it's like comparing THE bass God to....Well anything. And also, Newsted is better than Trujillo. Watch Rob play live, he just doesn't have the energy of Newsted, and isn't even CLOSE to Burton.

I play with fingers and actually feel very awkward with a pick. Pick is IMO really only good for Jason-style solos. For Cliff-style shredding IMO fingering is much better (well Cliff knew it ;)). IMO it gives you more freedom over the instrument. On guitar you can tap notes and play faster with a pick, since strings are more close to each other. You can't do that on a bass, at least not properly, so fingering is usually easier. It just takes time to get used to, especially if you're used to pick

That's not what the problem was, Lars and James didn't want to lose another Cliff and he left because of the whole St. Anger incident. He thought it was retarded to have the psychiatrist and no solos and everything. More than anything, he wanted to expand his horizons but the whole St. Anger idea wouldn't let him. it wasnt just for echobrain. I think Jason used the echobrain arguement to get out of a band that he never felt accepted in. Jason said that he hated the hazing and he wasnt allowed to contribute anything to Metallica so thats why he really got into echobrain. He wanted to get his musical ideas out elsewhere.

As a bassist I think Jason is a below agerage bass player. I don't know why he landed such good gigs. In a speed metal band like metalica, their isn't room for the bass player to do much but reinforce the grove. That solo was ameturish . He is one of the highest paid - non talented bassist out there, besides that bassist that was in Van Halen.

It's a soundboard recording. Since I doubt they were filming a live album, the crowd is not gonna have mics recording em. Also, Metallica are probably using high end microphones so the primary source is all thats really gonna come through. Metallica sux ass btw. Mustaine = God!!! I had to beat the dead horse.
