This ignorance goes both ways. I'm from Europe and I agree with you. I do think there are a lot of ignorant Americans, but I also know that I can't generalize a country with so many differences. And I hope that you, and other Americans, realize that you can't generalize a continent of about 50 different countries either. There are ignorant and stupid people in both Europe and USA. What a great tribute to a great man. That Paul Newman was a wonderful actor and a wonderful human being is a given. However, I do think that this video shows David Letterman's own true character as well. Tributes like this as well as his first post-9/11 show and his tribute to the doctors who saved his life show that he's much more than just a wise-ass. Compare him to Jay Leno and you'll see who the nicer human being really is. I'm so glad Dave will still be there long after Leno is gone.

Just found out about his passing. I remember him for his beautiful looks and his unusually successful marriage, which was so inspirational. He was a good actor and one of the most handsome men in hollywood. He will be missed. He really cared and did a lot of good work.

As a songwriter and pianist I've always thought Randy Newman was one of the greatest treasures that America will never truly know. Newman has penned some of the most hauntingly beautiful songs this country has ever had. Newman's the last of a dying breed, the true American lyricist, has something to say and he says it. You could probably put Harry Chapin, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Webb, Jim Croce, maybe Jim Steinman in there, in terms of musicians who were writers first. Their pop credentials were accidental. Were Newman a poet instead of a songwriter, you could liken him to Faulkner or Steinbeck, writers who presented a character, flaws and all. Americans don't get tongue-in-cheek anymore.

Short stories (not poems) put to music. Odd characters defined by tone and inflection. Irony between the lines. He's kind of a musical version of Flannery O'Connor. The guy is as original as a Hendrix lick. But as real as your brother in law - the one that cant breathe right through his nose. Thank God he couldn't bring himself to write any more junk. One reason why many musicians from numerous genres appreciate Newman, is not because of the tone of his voice or his physical appearance, but because of his caustic lyrics combined with traditional music. To add to my earlier comment, this score has that "special" quality that sets it apart from a mere motion picture score. It is MUCH, MUCH more!! This is a quintessential example of how the quality of certain music can be SO good that it transcends reality and touches on the surreal. I have NEVER heard a score that fills me with more emotion or is more beautful! Again...this is SHEER PERFECTION!!

I don't think I have EVER heard a score quite as beautiful as this. To say that it is "a very moving piece" just doesn't seem to give it justice. To listen to this always leaves me speechless and full of emotion. As another comment noted: "The best soundtrack of all time when it comes to capturing a movie's mood." I could NOT agree more!
