It all depends. Karita Mattila was 21 when she won a major national competition in Finland and 23 when she won the first BBC Singer of the World-competition which launched her international career. But there are also sopranos who have made their debuts much older. Another Finnish soprano Soile Isokoski was close to 30 when she won the same national competition Mattila won few years before.

I don't understand how you can be so critical without understanding french or german. You should understand that this clip is only a work session where she explores options taking the pain to explain to us what those options are and how they could combine. You hear no-rubato, no-pedaling and conventionnal rubato versions which she says are cul-de-sacs. So it's absurd you judge her by what yu hear/see here... Apart from piano, she's a facinating character - no doubt about that.

Arguments about her abilty are always going to be subjective. If she was less glamorous of course people would take less notice. But - she is what she is, and if people listen to the music because its her, they're still listening to it: result. Personally, I think Idil Biret's interpretation of the Rach Etudes op 33 are more understated, and ultimately finer, but she's an elderly Turkish lady........

I really appriciate for your sharing of thoughts, it's much better than just changing the target from critisize a public person to me . you mentioned "rubato is different", very intersting. if the articulation and sounding is losing his way, then how could the rubato be the same? if there was a right way or a big direction to the right way, but we lost the method by which we could achieve that, then of course there is a difference between the Chopin rubato and the one nowadays.

Thus, we're ALREADY beyond tradition when we talk about what tradition is, because, as Bilson demonstrates, no one really knows what he or she is talking about when it comes to tradition (Russian tradition? German tradition? French tradition?). Grimaud's thoughtfulness is beyond reproach, and if you don't like the way she plays, that's good and all, but your dislike can't be justified using a term like "tradition," which means so much that it really means very little.

You're right though. Midnight isn't too difficult. Most intermediate guitarists can play it with minimal practice. Probably if these Satch fans actually attempted the piece instead of being stuck in a state of childish wonder, they could pull it off. If anything, this performance isn't Satch's best... segovia is probably the greatest guitar player that ever lived,but his process of teaching is very uncomfortable,its like pele trying to teach maradona to be just like him as a forward striker in soccer,it just cant happen,because everyone has a different aproach.that applies to music as well,u cannot express even classical pieces the very same way u do it,u would have to posses segovia's mind to do that but that is impossible.teaching music must be a tough job, at least the philosophy of it.

Dear Guitar lovers, I just read the 1st 4 or 5 pages of comments and am appalled to seethat no one even barely mentions that Segovia's master classes would not have been what they were, nor would classical and Latin American guitar be what it is, without his main pupil and assistant Alirio Díaz, who turned out to be a finer guitarist than he himself. JoeriDobbeleir: he disliked electric guitars because he was already an old man when they were still a new thing. hes very traditional. many of our grandparents or great grandparents also did not like electric guitars. its all about the period you were raised, period. back in segovias day no real innovation had come about yet with electric guitars to him it was noise. quite easy to understand why he wouldnt appreciate rock and roll of the 50s and 60s especially since he was a classical player

Well, you know, I met Horowitz too, when he was travelling with the Barnum and Bailey circus in the 1970s. At that point in his careeer he couldn't find work playing classical piano, so he just played some light pop music between circus acts--Beatles medleys, Man of La Mancha, that sort of thing.

I met Horowitz myself in 1956. He actually played a piece on our upright piano. He was traveling with the Vienna Boys' Choir at the time. I personally really like Barenboim (his music), although I have never met him. I am sure if anyone has this ability, it is him. I love Richter's and Baremboim's playing. My music teacher always said that Horowitz was the greatest, and that was in the 1960s too.

Secondly, the strings are about double the length of the violin which allows it more notes PER string than the violin which makes it convenient to get a higher note by going for the higher strings. This means that the fingering for the erhu is more challenging than the violin (because the fingering varies according to the position of your hand). Well, I play both the erhu and the violin. And I can tell everyone here that the erhu is an exceptionally versatile instrument. For a start, the dual strings of the erhu never touches the neck of the instrument unlike the violin or cello. This character allows the notes to be varied according to the sensitivies of the finger pressure.

Again, you are wrong. Earlier, Ricardo speaks of the the anatomy of the hand, detailing the diferrence between the two sets of tendons, the extensors and the flexors. He shows how one should not use both at the same time, but that movement should be relaxed and natural. Please save yourself some embarrassment. We will post more of the lesson soon. The American fat tone, ramp nail style is sadly becoming extremley dominant, but it is not the only way to play. Tone is vital certainly but the ramp-nail, angled hand style leads to injuries because the hand is not relaxed (relax your hand and it flops down, it doesn't stay straight at the wrist). John Williams' technique is in my opinion saffer and I would bet my guitar that John will still be playing at a high level long after the muscle players burn out.

Many individuals appear in masterclass without this basic knowledge. Brandon played Dowland's "Fantasia," not a beginning piece. Richard Johnson, (1965 Segovia Class) also played for Cobo. Richard's student, Ray Reussner (65 Segovia class), had been playing the same length of time as Brandon. Both will tell you that Segovia would have never shared such crucial knowledge so intimately. They should know. Ray studied with Segovia, over a period of 20 years.

Who knew that nails could be so fun. Ricardo is a great teacher. He is able to determine with pin-point accuracy what a student needs and is most helpful and encouraging with each one. This is, but a timy portion of the lesson that Brandon received. I hope you had a chance to view part 2, on nails, where he finishes the nails and they try them out a little.

I think its pretty funny that they have found some way to feel superior to Pavarotti, not by singing better Abut by rubbishing him for his 'musicality'. as others rubbish his poor acting abilities, or his size. His many limitations never detracted from his singing, which is what he is admired, even worshipped, for. Even his most ardent fans would not suggest he was perfect in ALL things.

Brian Schexnayder sang 207 performances at the Met. Pavarotti sang 378. Both studied their roles presumably with the same assistant conductors and coaches like Warren Jones. Star tenors can be bad musicians. Second tier baritones virtually never have musical flaws - the competition is just too severe. Pavarotti was more likely to have benefited from coaching by Schexnayder, rather than the other way around.

Master class in Modena 1991 A bass was singing "La Calumnia"from Barbiere and Pavarotty interrupted him 3 times asking him to sing"the real notes".The poor guy did not understand and kept repeating the same initial notes.After a while the "big maestro"sang the "real notes"and he did sing the semiquavers that are written but FOR THE ORCHESTRA!!!not the singer's. What was so humiliating is that 3 pianists were present and none of them dared to correct the "meastro" He had no musical education.

Domingo is over-rated BIG TIME....his technique was always weak....he had a hard time even with a High B....totally bogus tenor.....Bergonzi's talent is tiny compared to Pavarotti's......No one can ever approach the perfection of the young Pav.....his incredible resonance in the passagio and above were incredible....also his voice was unique in that it was immediuately recognizable.....

Pav was certainly among the greatest main stream Italian tenors of all time. However it remains true that he was very nervous about the idea of teaching a master class on TV. He didn't think he was appropriate. Domingo is a working conductor. He could help anyone with the music. Bergonzi was the master of style. Anyone could learn from him. But Pavarotti's genius was his vocal technique. He was well worth listening to on vocal issues but not on matters of interpretation.

I know Pavarotti wasn't a qualified teacher, but I think lessons from someone who is a brilliant singer themselves can be helpful, but in a different way. Someone who is a performer themselves gives you different advice that is just as useful. I would have loved to have had an opportunity like this.
