I prefer Martha's later, maturer recordings of Rach 3. This one, while stellar, is a little choppy in the "touch" starting at 1:22 in the faster technical sections. The phrasing seems a bit too much "in the box" and metronomic in a way without that real "whisk" from the start to the end of the phrase. The singing unisono in the beginning and cantabile between 4 and 6 minutes is to die for though. Like Dave Matthews, she just has "so much to say" in those glorious moments.

I got it from a friend at camp this summer. I hadn't even heard of Sokolov before, let alone this particular recording. It's a bootleg, and I don't know where he got it. Maybe a friend of a friend. At least the first movement is available somewhere online though... And a Proms audience would explain why the crowd goes nuts at the end, but after a performance like that, who wouldn't?

ha ha! amazing that you mention that performance, from what, 1995 or something? I recorded it on cassette tape. Yes, he does actually top the Argerich (which I think is still the best commercial recording out there), especially the attack in the coda of the finale. Of course the Proms audience is one of the world's rowdiest. Where did you get your copy?

As far as current versions go - this is pretty good, and fairly close to older versions. Lena Horne is good, Etta good...but the best is Ethel Waters. Great rich voice-you FEEL the pain, the true deep down blues..it's meaty and chewy. Some of you will know what I mean, other rubes will just 'thumbs down' me, or slam me. It's ok, cause it's my personal opinion...glad if this spins your wheels, really!...cause this is one great song...and i'm so glad people still recognize great music and talent.

The Motown groups did as much for civil rights as Martin Luther King. I say that because their songs dominated the charts in the 1960's. Nobody could touch them. And there still isn't any music that can compare. They made it cool to be African-American and white kids wanted to be like them. Their parents may have grown up with oppressed African-Americans, but Motown changed that image. Martha and the Vandelas had the same charm on stage as Jimmy Hendrix IMHO.

Could not agree with you any better. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas were far more "naturally talented" than what Diana Ross, Mary Wilson to include the lovely, yet most talented Florence Ballard. Martha Reevess and the Vandellas constantly had to play the fall girls to the Supremes. If you listen to Martha Reeves and the Vandellas you hear their strong harmonies come in. The Supremes you can barely hear them and was rather monotone in nature!
