the acoustic-electric mandolins by fender are usually made more cheaply than solely acoustic ones. if i was you, i would aim for one of the acoustic fender mandolins that are closer to $300. if you had a bit more money, seek out a goldtone or washburn. the gibson mandolins are good but not really worth the price

well an octave mandolin is titled as such because it is tuned an octave lower, not because the string pairs are octaves. the bouzouki however does have octaves on the lowest 2 strings, and is very similar to an octave mandolin. in fact, i bought bouzouki strings for my octave mandolin and have the lowest string pair tuned in an octave.

I'm not entirely sure because I'm not a mandolin player but I think two strings count as one, so it's as if you're playing with four strings. It's tuned like a violin as well (GDAE).

The letter tell you the shape of the Mandolin. The number after it tell you the quantity and quality of ornaments on the mandolin. 5 being the most ornamented kind of mandolins, f being the most complicated shape of mandolin and Gibson being a company making quality and relatively costly instruments, this instrument IS expensive.

Great lesson! I'm pretty much self taught & played guitar in rock bands most my life so you can imagine how my pickin action sounds. I get a lot of complements but there are some down home who just don't believe it should be played like that so your lesson(s) will help me a whole lot being I went to school where Ricky Skaggs did I need to know how to play actual bluegrass! The mandolin is so refreshing for me.

It always disappointed me that maggie may should have been the single off of that almum becauae every track was fantastic. Mandolin Wind is so beautiful. What is it? It ain't really rock no roll, not country, not folk, but it has all of the gear, pedal steel and dobro. Love how the drums don't even come in until the coda. He was unstoppable. Rod had the greatest band, ronnie lane, woody, all of those guys on the inner sleeve of never a dull moment. And his dylan covers are so perfect. ah! youth

The likes of Olivia Newton John who left the UK in a tantrum prior to recording 'Sam' who stated: 'If I don't get to number 1 in the charts I am leaving the UK because I am not appreciated!' It didn't ... she did, and look what happened to her. If not for Grease she would have sank a long, long time ago.

He didn't 'adapt' to anything. He flapped around for years trying to 'fit in.' He drew a much younger audience. The flambouyant Rod who was much the entertainer as he was the singer pampered to whoever would listen to him untill he became what he is. Other bands of his era stuck with what they knew; Rod only knew he wanted money and fame; the latter of which cost him his ardent fans of that era. Again, he didn't adapt he sold out to disco and never did a good job of that either.

Dodge:I cannot disagree more. Rod put down his roots in his early years and then completely lost direction. You really should listen to his interviews where he says he was totally lost in his vision. He left the English shores and sold-out because he couldn't cut it with the English audiences who knew Rod when he *was* Rod. The likes of 'Dya think I'm sexy' he looks back on in disdane and publically states he had no idea what his fans wanted; in short, he sold himself out to what he is now.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaah!!! I wonder if I can get sheet music for this? I wonder if I can ever get the 5 years of practicing I would need to perfect it. I found the description pretty straight forward - there was no obvious tying of the string, and he described everything he was doing at the tuning peg with the 180 degree direction. ...sorry you broke 2 strings though.

I was right with this guy until he talked about the "tricky part". I noticed he moved the string in the opposite direction--the 180 degree direction--obviously trying to tie the string but it broke two E-strings for me. How pathetic that a person can perform a task and cannot describe what he is doing verbally. Very frustrating--find someone else to show you. I rate this video amazingly poor.

Well it depends on your price range. A is cheaper but the F is better sounding (in my opinion), although the A has it's qualities as well. Play both at a shop and see if what you think. Look for Maple back and sides if you can afford it. Micheal Kelly makes an OK cheaper mandolin and if you play enough Kentucky's and Epiphone's you may find one that's all right. I like Weber but they're pricey. Lloyd Loar designs are what most people look for. Also, Dave Apollon was way ah

Thile's not a 'bluegrasser.' I would actually say his playing is much closer to jazz harmonically and rhytmically than to bluegrass. Thile and Apollon are both pretty much ridiculous though. And, to Woody--what the heck do you mean by 'modern ideas'? Are you saying structure, harmony, and technique were not well developed or advanced until after Apollon? So like, after Palestrina, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Debussy, Prokofiev, Stravinsky....?

Actually, it would seem rather apparent that jazz and swing music are much more advanced harmonically and rhythmically than your bluegrassers mentioned are, though that is just an observation of cross genres, you should not compare. They are all virtuosos, they have different styles and taste.
