In it he talks about how his sister died and he was heading towards death - bedridden, and his mother gave him a guitar. Folks, it's time to set the record straight on a number of incorrect statements posted so far. 1. Leo tuned his 12 strings 1.5 - 2.0 steps down, thus the "roar" he gets. It is NOT because of any hearing loss....it's for TONE! 2. He is in Open G tuning in this vid (again, down 1.5 -2.0 steps). It is NOT Open C, or Eb, etc. Get it straight! 3. Medium gauge strings used here (0.13 - 0.56), but note the wound octave A (10th) string. VERY important for his tone. see comment #2....

Those are heavy guage strings. That's how Dick Dale gets that thick, rich "wet" sound. Between the heavy strings, the glass slide instead of a metal slide and what is probably a hideously expensive instrument, you're looking at a miraculous sound factory right there in the hands of a terrifyingly gifted, talented musician. The way they've got him miked also contributes to the sound. No pickups-- just a microphone. Check out Jose Feliciano's clips. Same deal. Wow.

The reason a 12 string is tuned low is they project much better when tuned low, in addition to making it much easier to fret. Tension on the neck is another reason, Guild 12 strings have a double truss rod, no problem with tension. Most 12 strings have a single truss rod.
