The great thing about the video is John Cleese's almost believable Hungarian accent. I think a lesser comedian would have just gone with a generic Slavic accent or something, but Cleese gets a lot of the actual sounds of a Hungarian speaking English just right.

Of course this is not the Hungarian version. And neither version is the "suicide song". It is just a very sad song so people were compelled to kill themselves, especially since the era in which the song came out was the 1940's and the war was going on, etc. It is a sad coincidence.

I am Hungarian and my parents have the song in their CD collection and they have the actual Gloomy Sunday DVD. There is no demon or voice telling you to kill yourself. It is just a sad song (the English version is also available and just as beautiful, I think it is sung by Billie Holiday) performed during a depressing era in Hungary's history (the 1940's, during the war) so people became depressed and some committed suicide.

When Liszt born "Raiding" was part of the Hungarian Kingdom and was called Doborján. At that time Hungarian was the official language in Hungary. Only after 1920 became Doborján part of Austria. So this makes him pretty much Hungarian and Ferenc. He never took German or Austrian citizenship either. He kept himself Hungarian and wrote it down in his personal lettes too.

I found this to take the "folkish" elements out. This is how I would imagine a jazz pianist like Oscar Peterson or maybe Uri Caine to play this. I definitely liked it though, unique to say the least! His phrasing seems very personal, he doesn't seem to announce the Lisztian ideas of power, but rather one of eagerness.
