Any broad characterization is dangerous, but I think that this song is very good because it reminds me of the way we used to be, and how some of us still are. I worked a few summer camps and most of the kids could stand being dirty, and God forbid, cooking! When we are incapable of taking care of ourselves in a very wide variety of situations, I would say that's when we've stopped being American. The American Dream might be advancement, but the American Way of Life is the Can Do, Will Do spirit.

Country folks are very important to our country because of the fact that they do farm, but they are not BETTER than city folks because of that fact. I dunno, I sorta assumed that this was talking more about the general state of affairs, not that it was the city slickers' faults for causing the situation. But let's face it, the government pays farmers to let produce rot because they want to insure that we always will have actively farmed lands in case something bad does happen (war, trade ties cut, whatever). I'm Jewish, and let's just say that living in the South was... entertaining. Nevertheless, I'm proud of who I became because of it.

He blames all the economic problems on the city dwellers, people only get mugged when they go downtown? Come on. Like nothing bad happens in the country? But the song is about celebrating a certain way of life. I don't see that he is necessarily saying that other ways of life aren't valid, but he is proud and happy with his. I live in a very large city now, but I know that because of how I was raised, there is almost nothing better for me to relax than to throw a bunch of stuff into a backpack and disappear into the woods for about a week. However, the sentiment often gets exaggerated to the point where people say that living in the country is the ONLY way to live and people who don't are stupid. Even though I'm from Northern California I used this song as my motivation for finishing my time in the Navy and getting back to the country. I used to listen to it out in the Persian Gulf. I just read an article that stated that John didn't write the song and haden't been to WV at the time the song was recorded. Ironically neither had Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert who first came up with the song while traveling up to Maryland). The two then told Denver about the song and all edited it.

I never heard of the "Blur-Oasis rivalry" until a few days ago from a comment here on YouTube. I grew up with the Gorillaz, and later discovered Albarn and Blur, and in my opinion I like Blur/Albarn's songwriting a lot more then the Gallagher brother's. Listen to how diverse and well-written the first Gorillaz album and Blur is, they are just more interesting then Oasis songs....

Just to make sure: Bob Dylan is my favorite songwriter ever, and he is a genius. That doesn't mean the drugs he took didn't affect him or that he is an angel. If anything, drugs made it worse although I don't want to tamper with history and imagine what would have happened if he didn't take any. He wrote many amazing songs at the beginning of his carreer before he started to go nuts (and still wrote great songs).

That's because we look up to Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell etc due to their music, message and poetry. That doesn't mean we agree with taking drugs and acting like a jerk (which Bob did). I can think of a few groups who are powerful and meaningful in their own way e.g. Rage Against the Machine. (humanbeing, you should look them up and listen to their lyrics. Don't expect the same, as they are not. But it may give you a ray of hope to see that there are people and musicians who do care.)

lehnrik--I had to comment on your post. I couldn't agree more. A great voice is not just about carrying a tune. It's so much more. There is an indescribable quality about Dylan's voice, perfecty suited to those lyrics, that bring that song to life as if pulling it from your soul. Lots of people can carry a tune. Great earnest presentation. Dylan's wherefore art thou? Such a funny mini-melodrama setting - made for tv drama - I love the man strolling through the set and out to the porch to ponder in the pines under the stars. the rendering of poetry - the young guy writing to a true love. a one-take music video. Did he show up to be a guest artist and collaborate on this staging? I guess I've read that he made a few early theater/ music experiments.
