That type of helicopter is able to land in water and then take off similar to some types of chinooks. The pilot tried to ascend whilst applying to much forward pitch to his collective which caused the front of the heli to dig in the water causing the aircraft to roll over head first. Similar to a surfer who pearls.

It is called "settling with power." Basically, the rotor gets caught in its own downwash. The more power you add, the worse the settling becomes. The only way out, at that altitude, is to fly forward out of it. That would have been really hard, if not impossible, to recover from.
