Yes this child is amazing. However, I do feel immensely sorry for her as the only way a child her age could be that good, even with a hell of a lot of natural talent, is absolutely constant practise. I would put a lot of money on the fact she has some incredibly pushy parents that don't let her do anything other that practise. She shouldn't be turned into a prodigy at her age, she deserves to have her youth first, at least.

I think it's just that I'm not used to the 56's, or maybe I just got a bad batch, but sometimes when I sustain a note, I break. So I prefer V-12's but I do use 56's just to try and get used to them.

No, you misinterpreted what I said, I meant that there are just some people who have a certain sound that can just make you laugh, cry, or just be astounded. My sound is my sound, that's the one thing every musician that nobody can take away. I just don't have the kind of sound that could compare to Arties.

What problem are you experiencing? Sound? Playing? I don't like the Rue Lepics-I think they suck. The Vandoren V12 reeds are great. Its possible your mouthpiece doesn't compliment your reed type. I'll let you know which mouthpiece I use. Remember, too, that embochure has a lot to do with the quality of your sound.

I don't know what the Toronto Symphony's reputation was in the 60's or 70's...whenever this was recorded. But today they most certainly are not very poor, they're probably top 3 in Canada and top 20 in North America without doubt. Maybe better.

Just to add another thought... when I listen to a performer who "interprets" a composition, I often think "gosh, he or she is so sensitive, that long dramatic pause was so emotional, etc..." But when I listen to one of Gould's "non-interpretive" performances, I think "Gosh, Beethoven (or whoever) really could put a bunch of phrases together to create a magnificent work."

I think this was Gould's experiment where he wanted to try the Emperor Concerto with a constant tempo throughout -- without the usual speeding up and slowing down and long dramatic pauses at the emotional moments which most pianists like ... so it may come across as somewhat mechanical. Personally, I like it this way! But that's just me.

Here we hear him play the adagio sostenuto from his second piano concerto. This unique recording with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra directed by Leopold Stokowski was made for RCA in 1929.

Shostakovich was also in a really bad physical condition when he made those last recordings whereas Rachmaninoff was always technically able to perform his works. If anything, Shostakovich probably made those recordings for self gratitude rather than the listeners. Also, performing aesthetics have changed considerably over the years, so displeasure over a recording may be an aesthetic one.

That isn't entirely true. Rachmaninoff himself stopped performing his third concerto after hearing Horowitz perform it because Horowitz "was the sound he heard in his head while he was composing the piece." Often, an objective and unsentimental approach to a piece results in a better performance. (of course there are exceptions, but generally that is the case)

no you have to be in 2nd position while doing this otherwise the other notes are out of tune and also in the wrong position.. the bottom B natural is a 1 so its in 2nd position.. so you have to reach but its a really hard reach lol

@OboeMaster: His tone is awesome, and the way he uses it! I know of no oboist with such a mastery over dynamics. Much better than the dull and foggy sound many other soloists produce. Holliger's sound is maybe not good for playing a tear-jerker solo in a romantic symphony, but it's refreshing and beautiful.
