I appreciate his passion for doing good works, just as I was in my 20's and did similar works. I just know that sometimes people can be lead away with emotion into error. I hope and pray this is not or will no happen to your generation. Remember it is the Truth in Love that we are called to live by and die for. I'm kinda confused here, how did you pull anything out of this message than "love"? I'm not sure what voice you're listening to, but it doesn't sound like anything that Shane talked about. It sounds like a distortion of what he said... If anyone is pulling anything out of this than to be lovers, or if their life isn't based around loving, then perhaps they're hearing something other than God's voice.

Watch the movie again. Yes, he hit her because of the pants, too, but that wasn't even half the reason. Remember all that happened before the pants. First, he comes home and the soda is warm. No big deal, but for Joe it is, then they get involved in a little discussion about the boats and the money. That's all Joe can take, so Dolores sees his pants, makes fun of them, Joe seems to follow her game, and when she turns her back on him, he attacks her. He's a coward, and looks like he's drunk.

I do agree with the idea of a covenant community which is exactly what the Church is, a covenant communit. It does not necessarily mean that the Church has to be nomadic in order to be covenantal. Did not the Apostles stay in the "household" of Lydia in the city of Thyatira (Acts 16:14-15)? Maybe 2 Timothy 4:3 but not 4. Perhaps a few churches are turning to myths, but not many unless you want to argue that the Bible is a myth which I assume we both don't think that. There is certainly a large amount of corruption in churches today, but Shane preaches to change that. There's no reason that Shane shouldn't be allowed to go to churches where there's corruption because it's definitely the very place that needs to change.

Jesus was indeed talking about worldly economics as much as spiritual. The language of the Sermon on the Mount is that of Jubilee language - the same language found throughout the Gospel(s). Jesus was calling for the exercising of the Jubilee (leaving the land fallow on the Sabbath year, which would indeed have economic consequences - "don't worry about what you eat . . . ") Check out the Politics of Jesus by John Howard Yoder on this - interesting stuff.

I wouldn't be saying that he's giving a bad sermon. He's verbatim quoting Jesus' sermon on the mount. And yes, Jesus' economics clashes EXTREMELY harshly with anything that'll be taught in any economics class (as an undergrad in econ). And, once again, these are Jesus' words. Shane isn't interpreting anything; he's only reading from the bible. If you have a problem with this sermon then you have a problem with Jesus.
