I saw Larry and the Sapphire blues band at a free concert in Winter park, Florida, in 2004, at the WLOQ-Radio station sponsored outdoor concert. It was great, as to be expected. Afterwards, Larry signed autographs for the whole audience! I did'nt have anything to write on, so he signed the back of my jersey,,, with me in it! LOL! Yes. I've followed Larry since about 1972 and his tone,phrasing, timing,finger vibrato is second to none. The difference with Carlton is that he KNOWS when to use speed and just doesn't "speak" musical diarrhoea like most of the egotrippers we have today.

I'm not sure why you're addressing me, as I'm just saying that those making negative comments should instead listen to what they like. But as long as you want to discuss it, I would say that slow or fast has nothing to do with bad or good. Some fast players are great, and some suck imo. I've heard Larry play blazing fast, and sound great. (I don't know what "shredder" means-not much, I think.)

Oh yeah, he CAN play very fast when he WANTS to but like the jazz master Kenny Burrell he is tasteful with his speedy passages. He opts for "feel" rather than speed and i find his style far more expressive than most fusion players. Albert King himself was criticised for repetition and lack of speed but Albert put more emotion into one huge bend than all the shredders combined.

But "shredding" means NOTHING! Have you ever seen those ads on TV where the announcer shouts 100 words a second at you? I bet like me you ''switch off' concentration after the first second and can't recall anything of what was said. It's the same with fast shredders on guitar.

It does seem simple for Larry's usual stuff but if you consider his riffs on The Crusaders "Put It Where You Want It" back in '73 that also seemed simple...until you tried to get the same feel. Some of the most basic sounding axemen like Eric Gale & others are the hardest to copy.

What i love about Larry is he always looks like he's having a great time. He's got a beautiful personality. This tune might seem easy because he's playing in true BB, Albert fashion but his bends are deceptively hard. (like BB & Alberts) It's nearly impossible to obtain the same feel as Larry or the Three Kings. Just look at the way he controls the vibrato up & down and makes the string sing. No 'shredder' can do this and even if he does you'd have forgotten what he'd played after five mins.
