I must say, in defense of Byron Janis, that he was playing under a time constraint on the old Bell Telephone Hour back in the 60's. That's why there is a hazy look and why there is no appause. Also he had to really rush through that last cadenza so that the network would not run over. Please listen to his recording with Charles Munch. Better than his other recording with Antal Dorati. He doesn't rush, although he is extremely virtuosic.

This guy is great, but if he'd just slow down just a little bit more in some sections, it'd be soooooo much better. On the Contrary...Byron does exhibition shooting in front of live audiences. Thousands of people can testify that he does indeed shoot that well. The candle incidentally....you don't have to actually hit the wick or flame...just have to get close enough that the draft from the passing fletching will blow out the flame.
