Bergonzi, like most tenors, sang the F's open, not covered, but they are more in keeping with the piece if sung covered or at least piano. This is a love song and the top notes of the repeated octave scales should be softer than the preceding notes, if technique permits.

Bergonzi non è il mio tenore preferito (sono un distefaniano convinto),"ma penoso", suvvia, non scherziamo! Oggi siamo fermi a Cura, tanto per intenderci... Ingiuste anche le accuse a Previtali, onestissimo mestierante. In più,ho il video completo di questo"Macbeth"torinese che inaugurò il Regio nel '77:un'edizione che ne suoera tante altre più decantate(vedi Muti...) con una Sass superba (ed era al debutto nel ruolo!, ed era giovanissima!) e un Bruson da antologia. The first time I heard Bergonzi sing this was in the 1957 recording with Leonard Warren as Macbeth.Bergonzi may of been singing at the Met for the first time,please let me know if I am wrong.I thought at the time that Bergonzis was even better than Carusos famous recording.This 1977 performance was when Bergonzi was already past his best.BUT in a role like Macduff ,the tenor has not a demandng role and Bergonzi could give everything into "Ah, la paterna mano" and he does here.

Se Bergonzi è volgare mi spiace dirtelo malgrado tu sia un cantante, non hai capito ancora nulla ne di tecnica ne di fraseggio. E grazie alle persone come te chel'opera oggi è diventata un'arte fredda che non trasmette più nessuna emozione. Infatti il mio commento mi pareva un po' più articolato...comunque i difetti di K. e P. mi sembrano bazzecole a confronto. Il punto è che questo cantante è volgare. Senza essere un "fighetto", penso che l'opera sia un'arte raffinata, non uno spettacolo da circo in cui è stata trasformata da melomani direttori e cantanti ( tra cui il suddetto ).

Tutti parlano di accento verdiano a proposito di Bergonzi, io lo trovo di una volgarità imbarazzante, non tanto qui magari, ma altrove...la tecnica peraltro buona ha piegato una voce non facile, gliene dò atto. Comunque quella esse....ma con i soldi che ha fatto un corso di dizione non ci stava?

La tecnica deriva dalle potenzialità vocali, le grandi voci come Del Monaco non hanno avuto una tecnica perfetta ma comunque, parlando di questa interpretazione, Bergonzi non sarà certo da meno tecnicamente, ma come interpretazione Del Monaco era UNICO. Ascoltati la stessa aria da Del Monaco. Non confondiamo i principi della lirica, grazie.

Sbagli, Bergonzi possedeva prima di tutto una tecnica di canto perfetta, oltre ad una straordinaria intelligenza musicale. La voce in sé non è certo brutta, ma è poco tenorile, anzi direi quasi baritonale, con quel timbro brunito, morbido e gli acuti poco squillanti. Ma erano tecnica ed interpretazione da grande artista le sue vere doti.

If it is a Gigli's tribute I imagine 1990, because he was born in 1890. Then makes Bergonzi a 66 years old man. I am proud of seeing him four times the great tenor, may be the best, in my hometown: Lisbon. I saw him in Gioconda (1965), Aida (1969), La Forza del Destino (1972) and 1976 (Un Ballo in Maschere). I don't think his phrasing is similar to Tristano, but I get your point! ;) They are both incredible musicians with a vast knowledge of harmonic and rhythmic possibilities, as well as having a lot of feeling and lyricism in their playing. I think Mick is an amazing guitarist, just because of his phrasing and approach to the instrument. On top of that, he is such a pure improviser. He's all about music and I think his personality really shines through his playing.

Very nice; Scala is a good start. No I don't care for Frittoli, although it is a pleasant enough voice tonally, I find the rest of a bit bland, and the top is getting a bit sketchy. Listen, I've seen Stratas and Scotto sing Angelica. After that it's not easy to be impressed.

I've not heard of him, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was touted as the next best thing to sliced bread, and turned out to be unleavened wheat. I'll be fair about it, just like I have so many times with the "new", but I doubt I'll be all that impressed. Hear, hear. I've always thought Bergonzi's voice has a uniquely sensual quality and at at times, almost even erotic. Check out the early '50s recording of him and Renata Tebaldi singing "Butterfly". When Pinkerton and Butterfly are singing the famous aria at the end of Act I, the listener does not have to know Italian to understand that Pinkerton's trying to get this young woman to follow him to bed! Bergonzi's voice conveys every nuance of the seduction.

What is remarkable here is not only Bergonzi in his 70's, but June Anderson's power and beauty and Furlanetto's class and wonderful voice. This and the sextet from L'Italiana en Algeri were the two best received pieces of the day and night programs. Pavarotti did show up for the evening program.

My only hope is that, if he was substituting for Pavarotti, he was paid what Pavarotti would get. His phrasing, his use of language are peerless in my book. But what makes his voice so distinctive for me is its virility. Many tenors sound like instruments. Bergonzi sounds like a man. Lots of singers have performed into their seventies (Cuénod, Sénéchal) but Bergonzi had them beat for the enduring vibrancy of his voice.

I'm always so amazed at Verdi's music in I Lombardi! I don't understand why this opera isn't as famous as others by the Italian master. Bergonzi is just incredible, the voice is exactly the same, though with much more vibrato and a less refined and flexible legato. But he's amazing for any age! Anderson and Furlanetto are also remarkable performers.

Bergonzi: "l'anima" di Verdi in questa aria tratta da un concerto tenuto a Lugano nel 1981a 57 anni!! e dopo oltre 30 anni di carriera. Esordio nel 1948 come baritono e passaggio (dopo 3 anni) a tenore nel 1951 con l'Andrea Chénier. Favoloso!!

Just saw Oberto at the Verdi Festival in Bussetto - wished the tenor had sounded one third as good. Had dinner at Bergonzi's son Marco's restaurant I Due Foscari. Bergonzi is running master clases there and attempts to pass on his knowledge but god they just don't make voices like this anymore.
