all that maters is that you measures are correct and your value shapes are at least close . if its easier for you to draw from the inside out then i guess its ok .. ( i think drawing the head and outlines first leaves less margin for error , but every1s different ;]. )

lolness: Kneaded erasers are better because you can mould them into whatever shape you want. They're great for making highlights on hair cos you can get them into a really fine point to create a strand-like highlight, I'd recommend gettin one =D This is awesome, can anyone link me to the original monroe pic?

The reason these artists are so captivating is because they absolutely understand form and denounce it. Neat work doing an overview of the subject. Anyhow, might be worth pointing out that not all brands are fully consistent. (As they should be) Some seem to be about 1 or 2 values off. (Not that you should plug any brand, but recommendations for good ones couldn't hurt.) Also I find that for consistent fine work, it's still hard to beat a mechanical pencil. And some places do sell mechanical leads in different values as well. Also where's the eraser shield and the drafting brush?They're handy too.

lol. you don't know the difference between "1" "2" and "3" pencils, yet, you know the difference for H(number) and B(number) pencils, which is actually the same idea. "1" is softest "2" is medium and "3" is hard. Oh, and, kneaded eraser=50% genius, 50% win. I've never heard of that thing before, and it really is amazing. You can make inverted pencil drawings with it!(And bubble letters)

The pencil has a long point for several reasons... 1) gives you more control over the lines and values you create 2) makes your 'sharp' point last longer 3) gives you reach. The long point allows your hand to be further back from paper so you don't smear your drawing. 4) gives you a finer line so when your designing, composing and measuring your drawing your line will be fine, clean and very very light... so it will fade away after you build your drawing.

I have always drawn like that. I always called it scratching, where you just do a bunch of small, somewhat messy strokes that slowly build up to the picture. Is that what sketching is? i don't know it was simple. i thought it was going out and draw something as finely as you could. It was the exact opposite. I also draw my "sketches" using small meticulous strokes. Yours, you do it broadly and freely. I'm going to do that next time when I sketch. It looks more fun... You are having fun.

Ok then...I'm not sure you understand color yet then? Sure, he is just drawing what he sees, BUT he puts his own twist on it with color choice, line direction, pulling objects foward or back, etc. This is a great example of not only color but perceptual drawing. I highly doubt you are an art major (to mahkahai) You just seem to fail.

you're saying he can memorize a photo and make an exact replica only with what he remembers of it? maybe the comment was misunderstood: monkcycle says he's lame cuz he's looking at the photo, and i'm saying that to do a portrait, you gotta look at the photo/model...and maybe he can also express what he thinks of or feels, but he prefers expressing what he sees, and does it probably better than any of us here, so dont call it lame.
