The average CEO works for hours and hours each day, travels to countries and barely gets to be with his family and friends (I know someone who is an executive who earns 5 million per year only because he works hard and used to be a low class citizen). I do agree with the idea of a covenant community which is exactly what the Church is, a covenant communit. It does not necessarily mean that the Church has to be nomadic in order to be covenantal. Did not the Apostles stay in the "household" of Lydia in the city of Thyatira (Acts 16:14-15)? The "church" doesn't belong to any one group of people. You would know that if you truly followed Christ. Any house of God has only one landlord and it is God. You assume that a) the poor are better taken care of in a socialist economy (find me a single case of this not being true and I'll show you a green dog) and b) that Jesus telling us to take care of the orphans and widows somehow involved big government and nationalized planning. Jesus was indeed talking about worldly economics as much as spiritual. The language of the Sermon on the Mount is that of Jubilee language - the same language found throughout the Gospel(s). Jesus was calling for the exercising of the Jubilee (leaving the land fallow on the Sabbath year, which would indeed have economic consequences - "don't worry about what you eat . . . ") Check out the Politics of Jesus by John Howard Yoder on this - interesting stuff.

I wouldn't be saying that he's giving a bad sermon. He's verbatim quoting Jesus' sermon on the mount. And yes, Jesus' economics clashes EXTREMELY harshly with anything that'll be taught in any economics class (as an undergrad in econ). And, once again, these are Jesus' words. I'm currently working on my doctorate in economics at perhaps the foremost school in the world -- University of Chicago. I've been on mission trips throughout the world. Just because you've been on mission trips does not make you an expert economist. I admire his zeal for helping the poor, but he blatantly ravages Scripture of its historical and literary context. It's called THEOLOGY. Everyone interprets what they read in the bible in a different way. No one is wrong and no one is right. Just the fact that instead of focusing on the amazing things a person does, you choose something they say that you don't like and focus on that, says so much. What a waste of time and energy. Instead of calling names, go out there and do something for someone who needs it.

Earlier, someone was upset because I said Shane was a heretic. I did not say shane is a heretic because he wants to take care of the poor. The poor need help. I said he is a heretic because in his new book, he says that when Christ said the gates of hell will not stand up against the church, that what Christ meant is one day all the Christians will storm the gates of hell with Jesus and rescue the people inside. I have heard him speak in person and this is only one of his many many lies.

That is far from the truth. He by no means says that by being a good person do we enter heaven, I just find that people get uneasy at his call, mimicking Jesus' call to not only serve the poor but stand in solidarity with them. Selling all we have and giving to the needy and relying on the Lord as our soul provider... I can understand why people would accuse him of being a "heretic", makes more sense to persecute someone who stands up for those whom america wishes to get rid of

It is wonderful to see people turning away from the lies of false prophets like James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and John Hage. They have confused worship of empire and power with worship of Jesus.
